About Us

Lore Samoyeds was founded in 1996.  Looking back, that seems both so recent and a millenia ago. I grew up with cats, dogs, goldfish, and the occasional parakeet. Cats came from the pound, the dogs were from a friend of a friend of a friend who’s dog had a litter of puppies. My longest lived goldfish, named (of course) Goldy, was suicidal inasmuch as this crazy fish kept leaping out of his bowl and I’d find him on the floor in the morning. It was weird, but I’d scoop him up and plop him back in the water and he lived for a very long time that way. But even with the mutts and the pound kitties and crazy birds and fish, I loved dogs and had a deep admiration for the arctic dogs.

When the opportunity came up for me to get a purebred dog, I opted for both an Alaskan Malamute and a Samoyed. Both were adopted through Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue, an organization I eventually joined and worked as the Malamute contact for a while. The story of my first Malamute is a tragic one for another place, but this is where I completely and utterly fell in love with the Samoyed. Nicky was a great dog who taught me much about the breed, about training, and honestly, about life. He was not the easiest dog, but he was amazing. And as my obedience trainer said, I liked him so much I got another. And another, and another and eventually started breeding.

The Samoyed is an ancient breed with deep connections to their people. Not a “beginner dog” but many Lore Samoyeds are in dedicated homes where previously no dog had lived before. Careful consideration of the breed’s demands and an understanding of how to live happily with them are important, even for experienced homes, but with that little bit of effort you will get an amazing canine companion. Sams look deep into your soul and imbed themselves so well there you’ll never want to live without one!

I still support our local rescue organization and believe that is a great way for people to get an introduction to the breed. But when you want a puppy, purchasing from a quality breeder is the best way to go. Yes, they are a lot of money, I won’t kid you here. But you get access to an experienced breeder, an expert in the breed. At Lore Samoyeds, I try to meet each potential puppy buyer in their homes so that I can match the personality of the puppy to the personality of their new family. When I can’t do that (and it’s not uncommon for puppies to be sold several states away or across international boundaries), other breeders do it for me.

All Lore Samoyeds are tested clear of hip displasia, PRA, and have clear CERFs prior to breeding. Most also have cardiac clearances. Careful screening of potential stud dogs to ensure that healthy, happy, friendly, intelligent puppies are produced takes time, but it’s worth it. I want what everybody else wants: a beautiful, happy, intelligent, healthy dog who will be an active participant in my life. That’s what you’ll get too.
